The Pioneer: The Engineer’s Touch (1958)
Started by Bansi Lal Hora (Former Philips Chief Engineer, Electronics Engineer and Teacher in 1958)
This is a story about sound, vision, and a frequency that has resonated through three generations of the Hora family. It is a story that begins not in a boardroom, but amid the vibrant hum of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and travels across oceans and decades to find its voice in modern India.
The saga began with my grandfather, Bansi Lal Hora. Born in the rich cultural tapestry of Chiang Mai, he possessed a mind that saw the world not just as it was, but as it could be connected. In an era defined by analog dreams, he looked toward India, a young nation eager for modernity.
In 1958, he planted the seed. It wasn't merely a business; it was a conduit for the future. He took it upon himself to bring the latest audio-video technology to an India that was just learning to amplify its own voice.
But Bansi Lal was not just a trader; he was a master craftsman of electrons. The images of him tell the truest story. He was the quintessential engineer—the man with the steady hand breathing life into circuit boards, surrounded by oscilloscopes and the scent of molten solder. His brilliance was recognized at the highest levels, leading him to become a Chief Engineer at Philips.
Yet, his passion overflowed the corporate lab. He was a teacher, standing before chalkboards covered in complex schematic diagrams, passing the torch of knowledge to eager students. And in the quiet hours, he was an artisan. He didn't just understand sound; he built its home. With his own hands, he crafted speaker cabinets from raw wood, understanding the delicate physics of resonance long before “high-fidelity” became a marketing buzzword. He built the foundation of our legacy on pure, uncompromising technical expertise.

The Visionary: Integrating the Experience (The Second Generation)
Growing up in a home that hummed with the energy of transformers and tubes, my father, Manoj Hora, inherited more than just a business; he inherited an intuition for innovation.
By the time Manoj took the reins, the world was changing. Technology was shrinking in size but growing in impact. He saw that the future wasn't just about having a piece of equipment sitting on a shelf; it was about seamlessness.
Manoj became a pioneer in the Indian market. At a time when the concept was virtually science fiction to most, he was among the first to introduce and integrate home automation. He realized that luxury wasn't just about opulence; it was about intelligence. He took high-end audio out of the showroom and wove it into the very architecture of people's homes. Under his guidance, sound became an immersive experience, a living part of the residential landscape. He transformed the raw components his father loved into sophisticated systems of living.
The Scientist: The Physics of Sound (The Third Generation)
And now, there is me, Utkarsh Hora.
I grew up walking the bridge between my grandfather’s workbench and my father’s integrated smart homes. I saw the "how" and I lived the "wow," but I needed to understand the "why."
This drive led me deep into academia to master Applied Physics and Electronics. I needed to grasp the fundamental truths that govern how an electrical signal becomes a spine-tingling musical note. When I look at those black and white photos of my grandfather—the concentration in his eyes as he solders a joint, or the pride as he sits before his handcrafted speakers—I see the original blueprint.
Today, as a co-founder of the audio brand xscace, I am synthesising seventy years of history. xscace is where Bansi Lal’s rigorous engineering meets Manoj’s vision for integrated lifestyle, filtered through my own understanding of modern physics. We are building audio equipment that honors the warmth of the analog past while embracing the precision of the digital future.
From a soldering iron in 1958 to the cutting-edge sonic landscapes of today, the journey has been long. But the mission remains unchanged: to capture the perfect sound and share it with the world.
